Ever since I switched to natural coals I have never had a problem. I bought a $10 single coil burner at Walgreens, and got some Coconara Coals And I have never looked back. Though they take longer to light they last longer, have no coal taste, and ash like a dream! The only time I have ever set off smoke detectors is when I use Cheap Quicklights like Three Kings:
